Ministry of Poverty Reduction

Introduction

The Ministry of Poverty Reduction is committed to breaking the cycle of poverty and homelessness for MNBC Citizens by addressing root causes, advancing equitable, community-driven solutions, and advocating for long-term funding and resources to support MNBC programs and initiatives that aim to reduce homelessness and poverty. Relationships are central to what we do: we work to foster partnerships with federal, provincial and municipal governments, and collaborate with relevant Indigenous service providers across the province.

Our approach is grounded in community input and cultural safety. The Ministry has worked to gather a fulsome understanding of the scale of Métis homelessness across all regions. With this strong foundation, responsive programs can help prevent and reduce poverty among Métis people.

Reports

The Ministry of Poverty Reduction creates community-informed reports to gain an understanding of the housing needs of Métis across the province. We highlight this data to our provincial, federal, and municipal partners to collaborate on culturally informed solutions that reduce homelessness and poverty.

Housing Needs Assessment

In 2021, MNBC undertook a baseline housing needs assessment to reduce Métis core housing needs by 50% over five years.

Findings from this report indicated that Métis households in B.C. core housing needs are at higher rates (17%) than the overall B.C. population (15%). More specifically, Métis core housing needs are at the highest rates in Region 2 (Lower Mainland: 25%), Region 1 (Vancouver Island and Qathet: 17%), and Region 3 (Thompson and Okanagan: 15%).

Poverty Reduction

MNBC and the Province of B.C. worked together on a report on homelessness and poverty among Métis communities. This collaboration marks a significant step forward in our efforts to advocate for Métis-specific solutions and ensure our community’s voice is heard at provincial tables, shaping policies that impact Métis individuals and families across the province.

One of MNBC’s core strategic priorities is the development of a Métis-specific Homelessness and Poverty Reduction Strategy. Phase 1 of our Poverty Reduction Recommendations Project, conducted in collaboration with Kwusen Research, has laid the groundwork for this initiative. We are now poised to build upon this foundation to implement targeted programs and services that address the unique challenges faced by Métis communities.
