2SLGBTQQIA+ Métis people were traditionally valued for their distinctive responsibilities and roles within our communities and have had these roles devalued and diminished through the process of colonization. The purpose of the Two Spirit Métis BC Council (2SMBC) is to ensure that the voices of 2SLGBTQQIA+ Métis people are represented and
engaged in all levels of Métis Nation BC governance.

“We, the Métis 2SLGBTQQIA+ of B.C. vow to walk with integrity as the proud Otipemisiwak (people
who govern themselves) our ancestors prayed for; to elevate and center the voices of our people in the
decisions that impact our nation; to foster a culture of wahkohtowin (kinship/interconnectedness) within
our Nation; and to build a future where 2SLGBTQQIA+ can thrive alongside niwahkōmāk,anak (our
relatives).”

Anya McVean

Region 3 Representative-Thompson & Okanagan

Anya McVean (she/her) primarily identifies as 2S or skom diloo (a Michif term that means “is like water”), but her other identifiers include queer, bisexual, and greysexual.

One of the greatest things that has happened to her in the past few years is finding the true community embrace provided by fellow members of the Métis 2SLGBTQQIA+ (abbreviated hereafter to 2S) within BC and elsewhere (our Manitoba-based Nohkumak/Grandmothers Barbara Bruce and Charlotte Nolin and their teachings are invaluable). Anya has had the opportunity to attend two 2S gatherings with the Nohkumak and many fellow BC folks, and looks forward to implementing much of what she has learned into my own life as well as sharing it with others.

She hopes that, in the future, she can help fellow 2S folks from throughout Region 3 to learn more about themselves and their history. She hopes that she can help facilitate more gatherings and events, and hopefully see greater access to things like 2S sweat lodges, the Sundance (one dream is to see a group travel together to Manitoba for their 2S Sundance), as well as other things as ideas come forward.

Anya holds a Bachelor of Arts degree with a Major in Theatre Arts and a minor in English. She also studied Secondary School Education and Counseling Psychology.
