Amelia Douglas Institute

The Amelia Douglas Institute (ADI) is a registered charitable organization that was developed by Métis Nation British Columbia’s Ministry of Culture, Heritage and Language. The Institute celebrates and uplifts Métis culture in British Columbia through educational and interactive exhibitions, programs, and research. The Institute connects Métis people throughout the province with their culture, heritage, and languages through virtual and in-person resources and initiatives and educates the public about the contributions of Métis people and Métis culture.

Métis Financial Corporation of BC

The Métis Financial Corporation (MFC) is a British Columbia Métis owned lending institution created to finance the start-up, acquisition and/or expansion of viable Métis owned and operated small businesses based in British Columbia.

MFC was created by Métis Nation British Columbia through an agreement with Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC). MNBC is the sole shareholder of MFC.

The British Columbia Métis Assembly of Natural Resources (BCMANR)

BCMANR is a separate society that is affiliated with Métis Nation British Columbia. Within the Natural Resources Act, “BCMANR” means the British Columbia Métis Assembly of Natural Resources, which is a non-political committee that manages natural resources on behalf of the MNBC.

Principles

BCMANR is, in principle, based on the success of the Métis people in the 1700-1800s. The “Buffalo Assembly” and the “Laws of the Prairies” were established by the “community” way of life. These communal commitments ensured the survival of the Métis people during tough times. The basic principles were: no “individual” way of thinking, and “that strength was generated from the collective group”. These principles were the basis of the historic Métis culture, and the present-day infrastructure and principles honours the past.

Governance

Each of the seven MNBC Regions appoints a highly-respected individual to represent their natural resource needs on a provincial level. There are eight non-political regional Captains of Natural Resources (Region 7 is divided into 7a and 7b) that form BCMANR. The Captain’s selection process is highlighted in BCMANR Policy and Procedures.
