Introduction
The Ministry of Culture, Heritage and Language develops resources and learning opportunities to reflect the contributions of Métis people, the richness of Métis culture, heritage arts, and Michif languages. Through training, research and advocacy, the Ministry advances Métis cultural safety, visibility and Michif revitalization. The Ministry provides a central service to all MNBC staff, by providing cultural support and guidance.
The Ministry developed the Amelia Douglas Institute for Métis Culture and Language (ADI) in 2022 and is currently overseeing the ADI’s operations and programs in its role as interim secretariat. The Amelia Douglas Institute (ADI) is the centre of Métis culture and language resources and programming in British Columbia. The ADI provides educational programming on Métis arts, history, and languages for both Métis in British Columbia and the broader public.
Ministry Programs and Resources
The Ministry is committed to developing programs and resources to advance cultural visibility, and to preserve and celebrate Métis distinct culture and Michif languages. We offer language classes as well as educational resources for Citizens and Métis Chartered Communities.
Aan Michif Piikishwaytaak (Let’s Speak in Michif)!
MNBC’s 10-Year Michif Language Revitalization Plan is the culmination of community engagement and research that is guiding our Michif language revitalization efforts. Citizens have the opportunity to receive support from MNBC for their language journeys and to participate in language programming coordinated by MNBC. Opportunities are being launched on an ongoing basis.
As part of our efforts, we’re offering different grants to support community efforts to promote and revitalize Michif languages, each of which address different goals of Aan Michif Piikishkwaytaak.
Supporting Métis Artists and Knowledge Carriers
One of our Ministry’s goals is to increase the visibility of Métis artists and cultural facilitators in B.C. Through the Amelia Douglas Institute (ADI), we deliver initiatives that raise awareness and promote Métis art, artists, and Knowledge Carriers across the province. Visit the ADI to learn more.
Developing Educational Resources
The Ministry develops educational resources and learning opportunities on Métis culture and history for staff, Métis Chartered Communities, MNBC Citizens, and the public. These resources can be accessed through the ADI’s website.
